스페이스원에서 오는 10월 15일부터 21일까지 베를린 베이스 작가이자 중앙대학교 조교수 Gustav Hellberg 의 총디렉팅아래 7명의 중앙대학교 사진학과 학생들의 전시 ‘Loft-Yard ' 전이 이루어진다. Loft - Yard 전은 7명의 아티스트가 모여, 각자의 방식으로 풀어낸 7가지의 ‘식물’을 제시하고자 하는 전시이다.
이들은 ‘식물’이라는 공통된 주제 아래 지극히 사적인 경험을 녹여내기도 하며, 집단과 공동체를 향한 공적인 메세지를 담아내기도 한다. 각각의 아이덴티티를 가진 채 자란 작업들 사이에 공통점은 없는 듯 하지만 제멋대로 자란 다양한 식물들이 모여 뜰을 이루듯 이‘식물’들은 다락에 모여 작은 조경을 이룬다. 이곳에 잠시 뿌리내린 다양한 창작물들을 통해 작은 다락 속 드넓은 뜰을 보여줄 수 있기를 희망한다.

Space One presents 'Loft-Yard' from October 15th to October 21st under the direction of Berlin-based artist and assistant professor, at the photography department at Chung-Ang University, Gustav Hellberg. With Hellberg's selection of seven undergraduate students, this exhibition introduces seven young artists' interpretation of a broad concept of the image 'plant'. 
Under this common subject, some works deal with broader social issues as others are more private and intimate. As a yard is composed by different kinds of plants, seven ‘Plants’ that have been developed with respective identities make a small landscape in the small space of a loft. Artists hope to present further ideas of a yard through these temporarily rooted creations in this small loft.

시놉시스:
베라 브루너-성의 첫 장편영화는 몬태나주에 위치한 미줄러시에서의 아웃사이더들의 경험을 보여준다. 미국 영어 어학 강사인 Doris (카틀린 와이즈)는 수업을 통하여 그녀의 국제 학생들과 점차 통화되어 가는 모습을 보여준다. 하지만 방과 후에 그녀는 고립감과 외로움 사이에서 방황한다. 그녀의 학생들이 우정과 공동체 의식을 찾아가는 과정을 통해, Doris 는 광활한 서부 풍경의 비밀 속에서 그녀 자신만의 정체성을 발견한다.

감독의 말: 
나는 자신의 기원에서 분리되었을 때 일어나는 현상에 대해 관심이 있다. 미국으로 이주했던 어린 시절, 나는 이런 분리가 곧 자유와 기회를 보장한다는 땅에서 자랐다. 하지만 그것의 결과는 어떠한가? Bella Vista는 그 양면을 보여준다: 근본의 상실이 가지고 있는 위헙과, 새로운 출발의 낙관성. 나의 첫 장편영화의 원고는 2011 년 몬태나로 처음 이사 왔을 당시의 경험에서 영감을 받았다. 

Bella Vista는 2014 년 1 월 Rotterdam 국제 영화 페스티벌에서 첫 월드 프리미어 스크리닝 후, 샌디에이고 아시아 영화제에서 George C. Lin 신진 영화 제작자상을 수상했다. 

Synopsis: 
Vera Brunner-Sung’s first feature follows the experiences of outsiders in Missoula, Montana. American English language instructor Doris (Kathleen Wise) imparts lessons of assimilation to her international students in the classroom. But in her off-hours she is adrift, treading a fine line between solitude and loneliness. As her students find friendship and community, Doris discovers her own true identity in the secrets of the vast Western landscape.

Director's Statement:
I am interested in what happens when we are separated from our origins. The child of immigrants to the United States, I grew up in a land that considers this removal a promise of freedom and opportunity. But what are its consequences? Bella Vista explores both sides: the perils of rootlessness, as well as the optimism of new beginnings. My first feature, the script was inspired in part by my own experience moving to Montana in 2011.

Bella Vista had its world premier at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January 2014 and was awarded the George C. Lin Emerging Filmmaker Award at the 15th San Diego Asian Film Festival.

SYNOPSIS

<두번째 사랑>을 포함한 이전 작품들에서 감독의 단상들이 인물의 몸을 통해 표현된다고 한다면 <서울의 얼굴> 에서는 외부 세계, 풍경의 묘사를 통해 구현된다. 삼풍백화점 붕괴를 시작으로, 1995년부터 14년간 감독 스스로 촬영해 온 서울의 모습을 14개의 챕터로 묶어낸 이 작품은 서울이라는 도시공간의 풍부하고도 혼란스러운 표정을 담아낸 열네 장의 초상화라고 할 수 있다. 서울이라는 공간 속에 존재하는 여러 상징들의 충돌과 역설에 집중하는 이 작품에서는 한 도시공간을 이야기 할 때 필연적으로 대두될 수 밖에 없는 정치와 역사의 문제가 감독의 시선을 통해 해체되고 재구성된다.

서울에서 태어나고 자란 토박이인 동시에 서울을 떠난 이민자이기도 한 감독의 시선은 서울이라는 도시에 속한 토착민의 것도, 서울을 이국의 도시로 바라보는 이방인의 그것도 아니다. 서대문 형무소를 방문한 일본인 여학생들, 여의도 벚꽃 축제를 즐기는 시민들, 감독이 직접 촬영한 삼풍백화점 붕괴 현장, 이태원을 배회하는 미군들과 관광객, 부처님 오신날의 연등 행렬, 419 기념공원에 소풍 온 아이들 등...  <서울의 얼굴>은 감독의 카메라를 통해 14년간 누적되어 온 이 이미지들을 모아 모순과 억압 속에 끊임없이 변화하는 메트로폴리스로 관객을 이끈다.  일상속의 사물들로 음악을 창조해 내는 세계적인 실험음악 작곡가 윤보라의 음악은 작품에 색다른 입체감을 부여한다.

Faces of Seoul is filmmaker Gina Kim’s unique documentary, at once a portrait of an Asian capital and a film essay of a transforming Seoul. The film is taken from the intimate perspective of both an ex local and expatriate, whose knowledge of the city is neither contemporary nor irrelevant.

Faces of Seoul loops its audiences through the ever-changing modern metropolis, from the Seodaemun Prison to the blooming cherry blossoms in a verdant park, from a neighborhood occupied with American soldiers to a parade of Buddhists marching through the streets. In each of these spaces, Gina Kim explores the city she so fondly remembers, reconciling the reality of her memories with that which moves right in front of her. By doing so, Faces of Seoul reveals Korea’s capital as a dynamic place where these opposing concepts--language vs. image, tradition vs. modern, native knowledge vs. exotic encounters—overlap and move against one another, none yielding to a single dominant perspective.

"I wanted to make a documentary that pays homage to two cinematic legacies: first, the great urban symphony films from the silent period such as Dziga Vertov’s Man With A Movie Camera, and second, the more recent travel essay films such as Wim Wenders’ Tokyo-Ga and Chris Marker’sSans Soleil. I wanted to photograph Seoul, while remaining attentive to its own unique sounds, and the fleeting nature of the cityscape. Faces of Seoul is collaged from historical archival images of important landmarks, still photos from private family albums, everyday street sounds, and the stories of several people whom I have randomly encountered. Seoul is a city that was once to me very familiar, but has become increasingly unfamiliar."

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

1973년 서울 출생. 2002년 장편 다큐멘터리 <김진아의 비디오일기>가 베를린 영화제에 초청되고 2003년 장편극영화 데뷔작 <그 집 앞>이 세계적인 호평을 받으면서 국제무대에서 먼저 인정받았다.
2007년 완성한 <두번째 사랑>은 하정우와 <인 디 에어>로 아카데미상 조연 후보에 오른 베라 파미가가 주연한 인종과 계급을 넘어서는 사랑 이야기로 세계 언론의 주목과 호평을 받았다. 최초의 한미합작영화로 선댄스 영화제 국내 경쟁부문에 진출했고 프랑스 도빌 아메리칸 영화제에서 심사위원대상을 수상했다.
2004년-7년에는 아시아 감독 최초로 하버드대학 시각예술학부 교수로 재직하며 영화제작과 이론을 가르쳤다. 하버드대학에서 처음으로 영화이론과의 정규 수업으로 한국영화이론을 강의하여 화제가 되기도 했다.
2009년에는 장편 다큐멘터리 <서울의 얼굴>을 완성하여 베니스 영화제에서 상영했다. 동시에 제 57회 베니스 영화제 경쟁부문의 심사위원을 역임함으로 한국 여성감독으로는 최초로 세계 삼대 영화제 경쟁 부문의 심사위원을 맡는 영광을 누렸다.
2013년 완성된 양자경, 슈퍼주니어 M 헨리 주연의 장편극영화 <파이널 레시피>는 상하이를 배경으로 태국, 중국, 한국에서 촬영되었다. 베를린 영화제 Culinary Cinema 부문 개막작으로 상영된 <파이널 레시피>는 한국, 중국, 미국의 관객과 만날 예정이다.
2015년 현재 UCLA 대학교 영화과 교수로 재직중이며 헐리우드와 한국을 오가며 활동 중이다.

Gina Kim's five feature-length films, along with her short films have garnered impressive acclaim and have been screened at many prestigious film festivals, such as Berlin, Venice, Locarno, Rotterdam, Buenos Aires, San Sebastian, Pusan, Deauville and Sundance, as well as the MOMA, Centre Pompidou and the Smithsonian. Invisible Light won the special award at the 2004 Seoul Women’s Film Festival has been screened at more than 23 film festivals and in over 15 countries.  Never Forever, which was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at 2007 Sundance Film Festival, was awarded the Jury Prize at the 2007 Deauville American Film Festival. In regard to Never Forever (starring Vera Farmiga and Ha Jung-Woo), Variety writes, “Kim’s highly sensitive camera turns the film into a chamber-piece of hushed eroticism and surprising narrative grip.” Martin Scorsese has called Never Forever, “A moving experience [in which] the performances are wonderful and touching, and the style...intense and very precise.” Never Forever was the first co-production between the United States and South Korea, and the film was theatrically released in the US, South Korea, and France.
Kim’s most recent film is 2013’s Final Recipe, a pioneering China-Korea co-production starring Michelle Yeoh. With actors and crew from all over the world, the film was shot in Thailand, China and Korea. The Hollywood Reporter commends Kim for how “she conjures a non-exotic piece out of a territory-trotting narrative, where every place is made to seem like home.” Final Recipe screened at the 2014 Berlin Film Festival as the opening film for the Culinary Cinema section and will be theatrically released in 2015.
Between 2004-2007, and from 2013-2014, Kim has taught film production and theory classes at Harvard University (Department of Visual and Environmental Studies), being the first Asian woman teaching in her department. Kim also served as a jury member at many film festivals and awards, such as the Torino Film Festival, Venice Film Festival and Asian Pacific Screen Awards.
Kim received her MFA from Cal Arts and her BFA from Seoul National University.
