젠더 + 기술: 오류의 재생/ Gender Hierarchy: Recycling its Errors

<젠더+기술: 오류의 재생>은 현재 진행중인 리서치 프로젝트로, 젠더, 예술, 그리고 기술의 접점에서 발생하는 문제들에 비평적으로 접근하고자 하는 시도이다. 도처에 존재하는 젠더의 위계적 구조는 기술에서도 똑같은 양상으로 나타난다. 우리는 이 문제에서 출발하여 ‘남성과 여성’, ‘동양과 서양’, ‘자연과 기술’ 등으로 나누어진 이분법적 구조로 담론을 확장하고자 한다. 그 일환으로 나와 타자의 순환적 공존의 관계에 시선을 돌리고, 이것이 가능한 새로운 구조와 내러티브를 주관주의적 관점에서 모색해 보았다. 2018년 싱가포르에서 처음 선보인 후 올해 서울에서 그 두 번째를 진행한다.

“나는 그녀와 그를 통해 우리와 함께 있는 그들 속에서 나를 본다, 우리는 편리함을 소비한다. 역으로, 내가 나 그가 그녀 우리가 그들 네가 나 그녀가 그 내가 나.”

새롭게 등장한 사회적 형용사와 명사 – 인스타그램적인, 셀카, 유튜버 등 -를 통해 우리가 일상적으로 소비하는 기술 속에 드러난 주체와 객체의 관계에 다음과 같은 질문을 던짐으로써, 주체성, 자동화, 재생산과 재소비의 논리를 살펴볼 것이다. 이같은 새로운 형태의 정보 식민화, 자본주의적 구조와 사상, 성적 양분화와 편견의 주체는 누구인가? 데이터 알고리즘 이면의 목소리는 누구의 것인가? 자동화 과정을 통해 인간성도 편리함과 쾌락만 좇는 자동화된 싸이보그가 된 건 아닐까? 다층화된 기술 시대의 인류의 미래는 무엇일까?

올바른 대답보다 올바른 질문을 찾으며 <젠더+기술: 오류의 재생>은 전시, 퍼포먼스, 토크, 영화상영회, 인문학 강연을 선보인다. 듀 킴, 다이애나 밴드, 로사나 그라프의 전시, 로사나 그라프의 퍼포먼스, 리사 클러스터커터, 플로리안 뮬러, 여인영의 아티스트-큐레이터 토크, 안드레아 프란코, 스텔라 안, 파비안 어레스티, 이혜성, 켈리 선 킴, 나오코 타사카, 리오 샴리즈의 영화 상연회, 허욱, 파트리샤 리드의 강연 등이 준비되어 있다.

포르노그래피에 볼 수 있는 젠더 위계구조의 구체성, 네트워크의 자본주의화, 팝 문화의 퀴어 미학, 자연성과 인공성의 혼재를 주제로 하는 전시와 여성 및 퀴어 독립 영화인들의 영화 상영회를 통해 다양한 내러티브를 살펴본다. 이에 더하여 <중국에서의 기술에 관한 물음: 코스모 테크닉스 시론>의 저자 허욱과 <제노페미니즘 마니페스토>의 공동저자 중 한 명인 파트리샤 리드의 강연을 통해 ‘우주론’으로 논의를 확장, 대안적 구조를 탐색해 볼 것이다.

“Gender Hierarchy: Recycling its Errors” is a second series of an ongoing research project addressing critical questions in the intersection of gender, art and technology. It explores the omnipresence of hierarchical structure in gender repeating itself in technology. Furthermore, it expands the discourse looking at the construct of dualistic approaches that further segregate gender roles, Eastern and Western thoughts and nature and technology. Through topics of subjectivity, it rather looks towards the coexistence and cyclical relations of I and others in search for new structures and narratives. 

"I see me in them with us through her and him, we consume convenience. Again I me he her we them you me she him I me."

Questioning the subject and object relations in the consumption of everyday technology with new social adjectives and nouns- instagrammable, selfie, youtubers- it looks at the authorship, automation, re-productions and re-consumption cycle. Who is the author of this new form of data colonization, capital structure, repeated biases and gender gaps? Who's voice is behind the data  algorithms? In the process of automation, has humanity also become an automated cyborg consuming convenience and satisfaction? What is the future of humanity in this technological era of complexity? 

In searching for the right questions rather than the right answers, “Gender Hierarchy: Recycling its Errors” presents a series of exhibitions by Dew Kim, diana band, Rosanna Graf; a performance by Rossana Graf; artist and curator, talk with curators Lisa Klosterkötter, Florian Müller and InYoung Yeo; film screening and lectures. It looks at multiple narratives with an exhibition addressing subtopics of gender hierarchal embodiment in pornography, capitalization of networks, queer aesthetics in pop culture, the entanglement of nature and artificiality; film screening of short to feature films with a selection of female and queer independent film makers, Andrea Franco , Stella Ann , Fabian Euresti , Hyesung II , Kelly Sun Kim , Naoko Tasaka , Lior Shamriz. It further initiates a discourse on looking at 'cosmos' as a new structure with lectures on Cosmotechnics by Yuk Hui (author of The Question Concerning Technology in China: an Essay in Cosmotechnics) and on Genres of Being for a Planetary Condition and the Semblance of Novelty Problem by Patricia Reed (co-author of Xenofeminist Manifesto)
