공유 공간과 시간의 교차로 II/ Intersections of Common Space and Time II
“공유 공간과 시간의 교차로"는 동시대 도시화 과정에서 아시아 국가들의 대도시에서 공공장소의 위치와 양태를 모색하고, 그 의미를 되짚어보는 협업 프로젝트다. 도시화, 도시 인구와 인구밀도가 지속적으로 증가하는 가운데, 공공 공간과 시간의 사유화는 점차 보편화되고 있다. 우리가 어떤 관점에서 접근하더라도 공유 공간과 시간은 줄어들고 있는 셈이다. 이 프로젝트는 공공 장소를 ‘공유하는 시간’과 ‘공존하는 공간’으로 정의하고, 어떻게 아시아에서 ‘재생'과 '젠트리피케이션'과 함께 일시적인 미시 공동체(micro-communities)의 영역이 공존하면서 공공 장소의 개념이 유기적으로 발전해 왔는지 고찰하고자 한다. 복합적으로 교차하는 여러 요소들을 살펴보며, 본 프로젝트는 '공유 공간'을 활성화시키고 함께 융합하고자 한다.
본 두 번째 협업을 통해, 프로젝트는 작게는 시간성과 이동성이 일치하는 틈새 공간에서부터 크게는 개방되어 있고 고정된 공간, 이어서 조작된 만남이 일어나는 온라인상 공간으로까지 공공 공간을 재고하고 다시금 구성해보고자 한다. 이러한 공간들은 개인과 공공의 경계가 점차 모호해지면서 발생하는 우연들, 조작, 그리고 이동성과 고정성을 반영하고 내재한다. 해방촌에서 진행한 미시적인 조사를 바탕으로 "공유 공간과 시간의 교차로"는 그 담론을 시각예술가, 건축가, 영화제작자 및 지역 공동체와 함께 진행하는 강연 및 패널 토크 '공유 공간의 파편화: 예술과 건축의 개입 및 융화', 워크숍 '마이크로 커뮤니티를 통해 미래 공유 공간 상상하기', 공공장소 활성화의 일환으로 진행되는 필름 스크리닝 '불확정한 시네마 II', 옥상 스크린 설치 '시선의 안과 주변, 너머에서'과 이동식 스크린 설치와 퍼포먼스 “10초의 눈길”과 같은 프로그램들을 통해 확장한다.
Intersections of Common Space and Time is a collaborative approach in addressing where and what public space is in contemporary urban settings in megacities of Asia. As urbanization, urban population and density continue to grow and privatization becomes a norm, shared space and time for public shrinks in all aspects. As we define public space as 'shared time’ and 'common space', this project surveys how the notion of public space organically developed in Asia into temporal pockets of micro-communities coexisting and moving adjacent to ‘‘regeneration’ and gentrification. With multiple elements intersecting concurrently, the project attempts to activate and immerse into ‘common spaces’.
This second collaboration further rethinks and reimagines public spaces from small in-between spaces of temporal and mobile coincidences to larger open stationary spaces and all the way to online spaces of manipulated encounters. These spaces reflect and cohabit with coincidences, manipulation, stationary and mobile forms constantly breaking boundaries between private and public in its urban landscape. The basis for this project are micro-surveys implemented in Haebangchon, Intersections of Common Space and Time extends its discourse with artists, architects, filmmakers and local communities in forms of lectures and panel talk, "Fragmentation of Common Space: Looking at Artistic and Architectural Interventions and Immersions"; participatory workshops, "Reimagining the Future of Common Space with Micro-Communities" and various activations of public spaces from public screening “Indecisive Cinema II”; rooftop video installation, “in, around and beyond a gaze”; mobile video installation and performance, “Ten Second Glance”

“공유 공간의 파편화: 예술과 건축의 개입 및 융화”는 대도시화를 겪는 도시 안의 공공 공간과 공동체와 관련된 작업을 하는 예술가들과 건축가들을 소개한다. 세 차례의 강연은 예술과 건축의 개입 및 융화가 어떻게 주변 환경과 사람들과 상호작용하고, 함께 협업하여 공유 공간과 시간을 만들어내는지에 대한 생각들을 공유하는 자리가 될 것이다. 또한 공유 공간과 공동체들의 다양성과 복잡성, 그리고 그 동시대적 파편화를 살펴보는 토론을 진행한다.
"Fragmentation of Common Space: Looking at Artistic and Architectural Interventions and Immersions" introduces artists and architects working with relations to public spaces and communities within cities of vast urbanization. The three lectures share ideas on how artistic and architectural interventions and immersions interact with its surrounding and people transforming, collaborating and creating shared space and time. A further discussion takes place on looking at contemporary fragmentation of common spaces and communities in its diversity and complexity.

지난 4년 간 해방촌 지역에서 다양한 형태로 쌍방향적인 조사들을 진행한 여인영의 과거 작업들은 퍼포먼스 인터뷰, 설치, 토론 등의 형식으로 해방촌 언덕에 흩어져 있는 공동체들과 여러 사건들의 연결하고자 하는 시도였다. 본 강연에서는 지난 프로젝트들의 방법론을 설명하고, 복잡하고 지속적으로 변화하고 있는 공유 공간과 시간에 대한 관찰의 결론들과 함께 예술적인 개입이 어떻게 주변 환경과 영향을 주고 받으며 점차 주변에 융화되고 있는지를 살펴본다.
With various forms of interactive surveys performed in the past four years in Haebangchon (HBC), InYoung Yeo's past art projects attempt to draw lines connecting dots of happenings and communities spread throughout hilly HBC with performative interviews, installations and discussions. Describing the methodology used in former projects, the talk looks at some conclusive observation of the complex and constant flux of common space and time and how artistic interventions become more immersed in its surrounding gradually creating an exchange of influences.

리서치(research)에서 시작하여 주변환경(environment)에 어떤 영향을 주는지를 고민하는 바래(BARE)의 프로젝트를 소개한다. 도시가 가진 가변적인 변화의 속성을 이해하면서, 우리 주변의 생활에서 새로운 공간적 경험을 만들어 보고자 한다.
BARE’s projects start with research and materialize with thinking about the influences on surrounding environment. The talk introduces projects attempting to understand the variables of urban space creating new spatial experiences in daily life.

주로 공공 장소에서 전시를 진행하는 라울 월시의 작업은 주로 야외에 제작되며, 그의 작품은 주로 박물관이나 전시장의 앞에서 전시된다. 그의 작품들은 항상 다른 맥락들을 다루고 즉각적인 환경에 따라 영향을 받기에 장소들의 다양성은 각 작품들의 성격을 변화시킨다. 모든 공간은 각기 다른 본성과 규칙, 박자를 가진다. 개개인은 각자의 관습에 따라 다르게 반응한다. 바로 이 지점에서 예술이 흥미로워지고, 일반적이고 평범한 것에 대해 재고하게끔 하는 동력을 제공한다.
Exhibiting mainly in public space; Raul Walch's productions happen outdoors and the artworks are primarily shown in front of museums or exhibition spaces. The versatility of these places changes the character of each work, as they are always dealing with different context and are influenced by their immediate environments. Every space has a different nature, rule and tempo. Each person reacts differently to the respective conventions. This is where art can surprise and encourage reflection on what is common and ordinary.

“마이크로 커뮤니티를 통해 미래 공유 공간 상상하기”는 작가들과 지역 공동체가 함께 참여하는 워크숍 시리즈다. 간단한 가구나 음식물과 같은 오브제로 만든 새로운 환경에서 워크숍을 진행하여 참여자들간의 상호작용을 이끌어냄으로써 미래의 공유 공간과 시간의 구조와 그 조화를 함께 재상상해본다.
"Reimagining the Future of Common Space with Micro-Communities" is a series of participatory workshops with artists and local communities. Creating an environment with simple furnitures and food objects, the workshops attempt to initiate collective interactions in reimagining the future structures and textures of common space and time.

‘흩뿌리다'는 음식과 좌식 문화에서 나타나는 사회적 상호 작용을 응용함으로써 도시 환경속 혼란스러운 일상적 오브제들의 배열, 지역 공동체들의 문화에 대해 생각해 본다. 미시 공동체들이 우연의 유기적이고 임의적인 패턴 안에서 모였다가 흩어지는 형상을 이동식 식탁과 방석을 간단히 재구성하여 재현해 본다. 초청 작가와 함께 참가자들은 애니메이션 기법을 활용하여 과거와 미래의 기억 속 공공 공간과 사람들이 있는 도시 풍경을 재상상해본다.
Appropriating social interactions of local food and floor culture, ‘Scatter’ is a workshop reflecting on the chaotic orders of mundane objects and culture of local communities in an urban environment. With a simple recreation of movable and foldable tray tables and floor cushions, it maps out a micro-version of micro-communities gathering and scattering in organic and arbitrary patterns of coincidences. With a special guest artist, the workshop collectively reimagines a cityscape with public spaces and people in animated memories of past and future.

세 가지 상황 / 트라이애슬론
앉기: 집단 (상호)작용의 일환으로, 참가자들은 균형점을 찾는 과정에서 대화를 시작하며 음식을 나누고 시간을 함께 보낸다. 테이블은 목재 모듈로 이루어진다. 참가자들은 무릎 위에 모듈을 올려 균형을 잡음으로써 테이블의 필수적인 부분이 된다. 각 모듈은 두 사람 이상이 참여해야 사용이 가능하도록 제작되었고, 그 과정에서 사람들의 몸은 리듬과 균형의 수단이 된다. 손으로는 음식을 나누며, 눈과 위로 색깔을 받아들이고 소화시킨다.
걷기: 걷기 실험 - 형태를 만들기 위해 기본적인 재료와 간단한 움직임이 필요하다. 천으로 만들어진 건축물 구조체는 공공 영역에서 자유롭게 독립적으로 움직인다. 천 조각은 지역 시장에서 구입한 천으로 만들어진 조각보로, 자생하는 도시 구조를 추상적으로 형상화한다.
타기: 스마트폰 사용자들의 연결성을 배경으로 공공 영역을 이용하는 사업 구상들이 계속해서 늘어나고 있다. 기이한 자전거 모델로 공공 공간을 상품화하고 있는 새로운 자전거 회사들과 같은 접근 경제의 발명들이나 광고들은 공공 공간을 점점 더 침범하고 있다. 이 대여 자전거들은 공공 장소와 거리에서의 안무를 위해 사용될 것이다.
3 Situations / Triathlon
Sit : As part of the collective (inter)action, participants share food and spend time, beginning a conversation while literally finding balance. Wooden modules are forming a table. Participants become an integral part of the table, balancing its modular tops on their laps. Each module is designed to be activated by more than two people, their bodies turning into instruments of rhythm and balance, their hands into tools, sharing a meal, their eyes and stomachs ingesting and digesting colours.
Walk : A walking experiment - basic materials and simple motion are used to create a shape, a fabric made architecture that moves freely and independently in the public domain. The fabric piece is a patchwork of cloth bought on local markets abstracting a wild grown urban structure.
Ride : The connectivity of smartphone users is bringing more and more business ideas in the public domain. The public space is increasingly stressed by advertisement or by the access economy's inventions like new bike companies that are commercializing the public space with curious bicycle models. These rental bikes will be used for choreographies in public places and streets.

HBC Bibimbap started as a neighborly gathering to have meals together from time to time. To share this experience with more people, HBC Bibimbap prepares foods with local communities and invites neighbors.

우리는 유사-선택의 시대에 살고 있다. 같은 관념에서 파생된 비슷비슷한 상품들이 개인의 자유와 대리에 대한 환상을 심어준다. ‘불확실한 시네마 II’ 역시 이처럼 관객들에게 일종의 선택권을 제공한다. 이를 통해 지역 사회의 욕망들을 흔들고, 선택과 유사-선택 간의 경계를 판독할 것이다. 영화 선정은 해방촌에서 거주하고, 일하고, 방문하는 사람들을 대상으로 설문조사를 통해 진행됐다. 최종 선정된 영화는 신흥시장에서 상영되며, 뒤이어 관객과의 대화가 이어질 예정이다
We live in an era of pseudo-choice. Where mere variations of commodities cut from the same ideological cloth offer an illusion of individual freedom & agency. ‘INDECISIVE CINEMA II’ also offers the audience a choice. It will try to unravel the desires of the community, and decipher the boundary between choice and pseudo-choice. A selection of films will be offered to those residing, working in and visiting Haebangchon (HBC) through a survey process. The selected film will be screened at Shinheung Art Market, followed by an interactive post-screening dialogue.

‘시선의 안과 주변, 너머에서’는 해방촌 지역의 경사지고, 들쑥날쑥하고, 좁은 골목의 지형 안에서 고정되어 있으며 개방된 공유 공간과 시간으로 하늘을 설정한다. 그리고 이러한 스카이라인을 일시적으로 점유하는 접이식 스크린 설치물을 제작한다. 도시 생활의 모든 영역에 걸쳐 상업화와 사유화가 서서히 확산되는 가운데, 스크린 설치물을 통해 자본의 흐름에 개입하고자 하며, 일인칭이나 삼인칭, 주체 혹은 객체, 이야기의 주체로서의 도시의 개인이란 무엇인지 등 도시 내 개인들의 복합적인 위치에 대해 의문을 던진다.
Framing open sky as the stationary open common space and time in a hilly, jagged and narrow alleyway filled neighborhood of Haebangchon (HBC), ‘in, around and beyond a gaze’ is a foldable video installation temporarily occupying the skyline. With bombardments of commercialization and privatization seeping into all borders of our urban life, the video installation disrupts this flow of capital, questioning urban individuals in its multiple positions as 1st person observer, 3rd person observer, subject and object, protagonist in her or his own narratives.

이동식 설치물 트럭 Mobile Truck Installation

‘10초의 눈길'은 스페이스 원과 방은겸 작가가 협업으로 진행하는 한 시간 가량의 이동식 비디오 설치와 퍼포먼스이다. 욕실용 수세미부터 오븐에 구운 피자까지 모든 것을 판매하면서 서울 좁은 골목들에 서 있거나 골목 어귀를 점유하며 서울의 소리 풍경을 만들기도 하는 트럭 상인들로부터 영감을 받은 이 작업은 서울 특유의 도시 생활의 순환과 지리적 특성을 그려낸다. 트럭이 해방촌 일대를 세 번에 걸쳐 운행하면서 세 번의 짧은 정차를 통해 파편화된 사건들을 이어나가는 동안 트럭에 설치된 이동식 스크린에서는 일련의 비디오들이 반복 재생된다. 짧은 정차 시간 동안 방은겸 작가는 공공 공간의 소비 행위를 모방하며 주민들을 초대하여 사과밥을 후원하는 퍼포먼스를 진행하고, 스크린에서는 도시에서 촬영된 무성의 인터뷰들을 재생된다.
‘Ten Second Glance’ is a one hour mobile video installation and performance collaboration by Space One and Eunkyum Bang. Inspired by truck sellers in Korea, selling everything from a toilet brush to oven baked pizzas, driving around small alleyways stopping and occupying street corners and soundscapes of Seoul, this collaboration portrays the unique geography and circulation of urban life in Seoul. Connecting the fragmented pockets of happenings around Haebangchon with three cycles and three short stops, the installation simultaneously shows a series of videos looping. During the short stops, a performative interaction by Bang invites the community to imitate the act of consumption in public space with her apple rice and the videos of silent interviews of the city.

InYoung Yeo (Space One) is an independent artist, curator and director. With a background in English Literature, Illustration and Fine Art in countries including UK, US and Korea, she started an artist-run space -Space One- in Seoul 2014. Since then, she has put together and participated in various collaborative exhibitions, working and experimenting with emerging artists and art spaces from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Germany, UK, US, Canada among others. 황유미(스페이스 원)는 영상, 사진, 설치 작업을 통해 시공간을 새롭게 편집하여 관찰자와 대상 사이의 새로운 관계를 구축하는 데에 관심을 두고 있다. 도시의 풍경을 다룬 <Beyond the Borders>(The Crypt Gallery, 2017), 무용가와 협업한 <Rhythmic Osmosis>(Limehouse Town Hall, 2016) 외 단체전에 참여하였고 공간291 신인작가 지원전(2018)으로 첫 개인전 <세로의 수면(水面)>을 열었다. 최근 서울국제뉴미디어페스티벌 (네마프2018) 중 전시 ‘글로컬구애전X’에 참여하였다.
Youmee Hwang (Space One) works across video, photography and installation, to create a new relationship between the observer and the object with a notion of nonlinear time-space. Some works include Beyond the Borders(The Crypt Gallery, 2017), a group show where she deals with a cityscape and Rhythmic Osmosis(Limehouse Town Hall, 2016) in which she collaborates with a dancer. Youmee Hwang had the first ever solo show Standing Surface of Water for Space291 Emerging Artist Exhibition(2018) and recently participated in Seoul International NewMedia Festival (NeMaf2018). www.youmeehwang.com
바래(BARE)는 전진홍, 최윤희에 의해 서울에 설립된 건축 스튜디오다. 역동적으로 변모하는 도시 속 시간과 환경에 조응하는 리서치 기반의 건축작업을 2014년부터 지속해오고 있다. 전진홍은 영국AA스쿨 졸업 후 네덜란드 OMA와 공간그룹에서 실무를 쌓았다. 최윤희는 영국 캠브리지 대학교와 AA스쿨 졸업 후 윌킨슨아이어, 제이슨브루지스 스튜디오 등에서 공공 예술 및 건축 프로젝트를 이끌었으며 현재 한국예술종합학교 초빙교수로 있다. <아름지기 헤리티지 투모로우> 공모전 수상 (2015), <젊은 건축가 프로그램 2016> 최종후보군으로 선정되었고, ACC <새로운 유라시아> 키네틱파빌리온 설치 및 전시(2015)에 참여하였다. 서울도시건축비엔날레(2017)와 제16회 베니스비엔날레 건축전에 초대되어 설치작업을 선보였다.
BARE is an architectural studio based in Seoul established by Jinhong Jeon and Yunhee Choi. Since 2014, the studio has engaged in research and practice questioning how architecture can respond to changes over time and environment. Jinhong Jeon graduated from the Architectural Association and has worked at OMA (Netherlands) and Space Group (Korea). Yunhee Choi graduated from the University of Cambridge and the Architectural Association and has worked at Wilkinson Eyre Architects and Jason Bruges Studio (UK). She is currently a Visiting Professor at Korea National University of Arts. BARE's works include the installation of a kinetic pavilion for Imagining New Eurasia (2015) at the Asia Culture Center. BARE was awarded Arumjigi Heritage Tomorrow Prize (2015), Young Architects Program Finalist (2016) and invited to exhibit in the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism (2017) and the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale (2018). www.bare.kr
라울 월시(Raul Walch)는 예술 장르와 독창적인 실천의 경계에서 작업을 한다. 그는 조각가와 개념 미술가로도 활동하기도 하지만, 연구가의 자세를 취하거나 퍼포먼스의 일부가 되기도 한다. 그의 작업은 사회적 현실에 대한 비관습적인 접근을 만들어 내는 데에 초점을 둔다. 그러한 과정 중에 관찰자들이 예기치 않게 포함되기도 한다. 월시의 유희적인 작업과 활동은 단지 질문하기와 참여로 끝나지 않는다. 대신에, 그는 세계의 각기 다른 환경들에 대한 응답으로 단발적이고 장소특정적인 개입을 만들어낸다. 그의 작업들은 베를린 내 전시 오프닝에서 불법적으로 즉흥적인 분수를 제작하거나, 아디스 아바바를 지나 조각을 운반하거나, 후쿠시마 원자로의 근처의 무인 지대에 깃발을 내리는 등 다양한 형태를 가진다 . 월시의 사회적 조각들의 원 재료들은 동시대 사건들과 맥락이다. 라울 월시는 베를린 바이센제 미술대학에서 조각을 공부한 뒤, 베를린예술대학 올라프 엘리아슨 스튜디오에서 수학하고, 공간실험 연구소에 참여했다. 현재 베를린에서 작업을 하고 있다.
Raul Walch crosses the boundaries of artistic genres in his broad and inventive practise. He works as a sculptor and conceptual artist but also slips easily into the roll of an investigator or becomes part of a performance. His focus is on creating an unconventional approach to social reality, often unexpectedly including observers in the process. Walch's playful works and actions are not limited to questioning or participation. Instead, he creates ephemeral and largely site-specific interventions that respond to different environments around the world. Past works have ranged from illegal impromptu fountains at exhibition openings in Berlin, transporting sculptures through Addis Ababa or hoisting flags in the no-man‘s-land around the Fukushima reactor Daiichi. In Walch’s social sculptures, context and current affairs are the raw material. After studying sculpture at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee Raul Walch was a student at the class of Olafur Eliasson at the Universität der Künste Berlin and a participant and grant at the Institute für Raumexperimente. 김예영은 홍익대학교 애니메이션과를 졸업했고 2010년부터 야망과 공상의 실험실 스튜디오 요그에서 김영근과 함께 애니메이션 기법을 기반으로한 다양한 창작 활동을 해오고 있다. 단편영화, 광고, 뮤비, 웹툰, 게임시나리오, 미디어아트 전시, 영화제개최, 애니메이션 클래스 등 여러 영역에서 작업을 하고 있다.
Yeyoung Kim studied animation at Hongik University. She has engaged in various creative activities with the medium of animation as Studio Yog with Young Geun Kim since 2010. She works in a wide range of forms from short films, commercial videos, music videos, game scenarios, webtoons and has shown in media art shows and film festivals. www.yog.co.kr, Instagram @studio.yog
스테이크필름(STEAKFILM)은 서울을 기반으로 영화 이론과 각본, 예술의 배경을 가진 작가들이 설립한 필름 프로덕션 하우스이다. 상업 영상 제작 외에도 아티스트, 건축가와 협업하여 실험적이고 확장적인 프로젝트를 진행하고 있다. 2017년도부터는 관객과의 소통을 통하여 보다 상호적인 영화 문화를 만들기 위해 서울에서 공공 상영회를 주기적으로 주최하고 있다.
STEAKFILM is a film production house based in Seoul with founders who have a background in film theory, screenwriting and fine arts. Outside of commercial film production, STEAK also collaborates with artists and architects on experimental and expansive projects beyond the commercial realm. Since 2017, STEAK has also organized public film screenings with the purpose of creating a deeper interactive film culture within the city. www.steakfilm.com
방은겸(apple salon with BANG)은 프랑스 그르노블 국립미술대학교에서 미디어아트를 전공하고 “사과”를 주제로 사과 페인팅, 사과 요리, 사과 옷, 비디오 등 다양한 매체를 이용한 복합 매체를 시도하고 있다. “사과하기전에 사과하는 마음으로 사과 드려요”라는 생각으로 작업을 시작하고 표현한다.
Eunkyum Bang (apple salon with BANG) studied Media art in École supérieure d'art de Grenoble and have worked in mixed media with various medium around the theme of “apple” including apple painting, apple recipe, apple clothes and video. Bang initiates and visualizes her work with the idea of “Please take my apple in apology before my apology”.
HBC Bibimbap is a community gathering with various eateries to initiate talks among the residents in Haebangchon. To share experiences and ideas about the local community, HBC Bibimbap puts together a series of dining events at different venues and different food.
해방촌 문화비빔밥은 2017년부터 해방촌에서 거주하거나 생활하는 이들이 이따금씩 모여 식사를 하던 모임에서 시작되었다. 지역의 여러 분야의 공동체들과 함께 마을밥상을 준비하고 더 많은 사람들을 초대하여 서로의 소식을 나누고 즐거움과 어려움을 함께하고자 한다.
