Zine의 의미에 다가가고 진문화를 알리기 위한 사전 퍼포먼스 프로그램 <떠ㅅ다방> 을 통해, 우리는 Zine을 어떻게? 어디까지? 알고 있는지? 개념을 확인하는 자리로 만들어졌습니다.

많은 분들이 궁금해하신 것만큼 저 또한 궁금했던 Zine을 전시를 통해 조금씩 알아가는 시간이 되었으면 합니다.

또한 전시 중 연계 프로그램으로 양승욱 정민주 작가가 진행하는 Zine 워크숍을 통해서도 우리는 Zine을 어디까지 알고 있는지 확인해 보는 자리가 될 것입니다.

<젠더+기술: 오류의 재생>- 젠더, 예술, 그리고 기술의 접점에서 발생하는 문제들에 비평적으로 접근하고자 하는 프로젝트의 일환으로 허욱과 파트리샤 리드의 강연을 선보인다. 두개의 강연은 인간중심의 사상에서 나아가 ‘우주론'에서 순환적 공존의 이념과 다층적 내러티브를 찾아본다. 허욱은 철학가이며 올해 한국에서 새롭게 변역되어 출판된 <중국에서의 기술에 관한 물음: 코스모 테크닉스 시론>의 저자이다. 그의 강연에서는 그가 동서양의 주요 철학가에서부터 이끌어온 자연과 기술의 이론인 ‘코스모 테크닉스' 즉 ‘기술의 활동을 통한 우주의 질서와 윤리의 질서의 융합’에 대한 이론을 펼친다. 파트리샤 리드의 강연 ‘행성적 환경안에서의 존재의 장르와 진기함의 문제성'에서는 우주적 변화와 반대로 사회를 이끄는 ‘적응형 변화(adaptive change)'에 대한 문제를 제기한다. 나아가, 경제-계산적 현실의 (economic-computational reality) 조건이, 인류가 자신을 바라보고, 상호 관계를 맺고, 역사적 미완성의 공통 과제를 풀기위해 어떻게 패러다임의 변화를 요구하는지 탐구한다.

As a part of the project “Gender Hierarchy: Recycling its Errors”-addressing critical questions in the intersection of gender, art and technology- presents two lectures by Yuk Hui, author of ‘The Question Concerning Technology in China: an Essay in Cosmotechnics’ and Patricia Reed, co-author of ‘The Xenofeminist Manifesto'. The lectures explore ‘cosmos’ as a form of logic that encompasses ideologies and narratives of continuity, coexistence and cyclical relations of future humanity. Yuk Hui - philosopher - focuses on ‘Cosmotechnics’ (“preliminary definition that is the unification of the cosmic order and moral order through technical activities” Yuk Hui) drawn from both the Eastern and Western thinkers in developing the theory of nature and technics. Patricia Reed-artist, writer and designer- in her talk, ‘Genres of Being for a Planetary Condition and the Semblance of Novelty Problem’, explores the problem of ‘adaptive change’ as opposed to cosmological change, and how the totalising condition of entangled economic-computational reality demands paradigmatic transformations in how humanity sees itself and co-relates, towards a common project of historical incompletion.

참여자 소개:

허욱은 철학자이자 바이마르 바우하우스 대학에서 강연하고 있으며 홍콩시립대학 창작 미디어학과 방문 교수이다. 2019년 한글로 번역된 ‘중국에서의 기술에 관한 물음: 코스모 테크닉스 시론’ 의 저자이며 홍콩대학과 런던 골드스미스 대학에서 컴퓨터공학과 철학을 공부하고 기술의 철학을 연구해왔다. 그는 2012년 부터 독일의 로이파냐 대학(the Leuphana University )과 항저우의 차이나 예술 아카데미 (the China Academy of Art) 에서 철학을 가르쳐 왔다.

‘국제시몽동연구센터 회원으로 본서 외에도 On the Existence of Digital Objects(2016)와 Recursivity and Contingency 등의 저서가 있다. 런던의 골드스미스에서 스티글러의 지도 아래 (기술)철학을 전공했다. 서양 형이상학의 존재?―?망각을 극복하려고 한 하이데거를 다시 기술?―?망각 테제를 통해 넘어서고자 하는 스티글러의 문제의식과 공명하고 또 대화하면서 ‘21세기의 기술 문명 극복’이라는 거대한 과제를 ‘동양’의 눈을 통해 글로벌하게 모색하고 있다. 우리 시대의 절박한 이 과제를 동서양을 두루 아우르면서 새롭게 사유하려는 선구적인 시도 중의 하나를 대변하는 이 신진학자의 새로운 시도는 중국과 일본을 비롯해 유럽 등 전 세계에 걸쳐 널리 주목받고 있다. ‘ (www.kyoboacademy.co.kr )

파트리샤 리드는 독일 베를린에서 활동하는 작가, 저술가, 디자이너다. 예술가로서 그의 주요 전시는 캐나다 오타와 소재 칼튼 대학 화랑(Carleton University Art Gallery, CUAG), 미국 캘리포니아주 오클랜드시 소재 자본주의 박물관(Museum of Capitalism), 레바논 베이루트 소재 홈 워크스 7(Home Works 7), 네덜란드 로테르담 소재 비테 데 비트 현대 미술 센터(Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art), 베를린 소재 세계 문화의 집(Haus der Kulturen der Welt, HKW), 그리고 독일 슈투트가르트 소재 슈투트가르트 뷔르템베르크 미술 협회(Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart)에서 개최된 ‘하나와 여럿(The One and The Many)’전이 있다. 그의 최근 글은 『Para-Platforms』(Sternberg Press, 발간 예정), 『Post-Meme』(Punctum Books, 발간 예정), 『e-flux Architecture』, 『Xeno-Architecture』(Sternberg Press, 발간 예정), 『_AH Journal』, 『Cold War/Cold World』(Urbanomic), 『Distributed』(Open Editions), 『MoneyLab Reader #2』(Inst. of Networked Cultures), 『The Neurotic Turn』(Repeater Books)에 발표된 바 있다. 리드는 세계 문화의 집에서 개최된 ‘속박에서 풀린 1948년: 유물(1948 Unbound: Tokens)’(2017)을 빅토리아 이바노바(Victoria Ivanova)와 공동 기획했으며, ‘2018 공공 예술 뮌헨’(Public Art Munich 2018)의 이론 연구자였다. 또한 리드는 라보리아 쿠보닉스(Laboria Cubonics, 기술 물질적 페미니즘) 실무 집단의 일원인데, 이 집단이 발간한 『제노페미니즘 선언(Xenofeminist Manifesto)』(2015)은 2018년 가을에 버소 북스(Verso Books)에 의해 재발간됐다.

여인영은 작가, 독립 큐레이터이자 디렉터이다. 영국, 미국, 한국에서 영문학, 일러스트레이션, 미술을 수학한 후, 2014년 서울에서 작가 운영 공간 스페이스 원을 창립했다. 이후 한국, 일본, 대만, 독일, 영국, 미국 등 다양한 국가의 미술 공간 및 신진 작가들과 함께 작업하고 실험하며 여러 협력 전시들을 기획했다. 주요 프로젝트 및 전시로 서울 도시데이타 사이언스 연구소 프로젝트 'A.I.MAGINE': 전시, 강연, 워크샵, 퍼포먼스 기획; 스페이스원 프로젝트 'Gender Hierarchy' 독일문화원 싱가포르 후원: 전시, 강연, 퍼포먼스; 2017서울도시건축비엔날레 ‘삼방 회로’: 퍼포먼스 인터뷰와 전시, 퍼포먼스, 패널 토크; 독일문화원 동아시아 지역 프로젝트 'A Better Version of 人' 한국 프로그램: 전시, 패널 토크, 워크샵 기획; 'A Free Breakfast', 'Multitude', 'Bare' 등의 그룹전시 및 '공간', '비쥬얼 인터뷰' 등의 개인전을 열었다.

Yuk Hui is a philosopher, currently teaches at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany. Since 2012, Hui has been teaching philosophy at the Institute for Philosophy at the Leuphana University in Germany and at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, he was also a Visiting Associate Professor at the School of Creative Media of the City University of Hong Kong in 2019, a researcher of the Centre international des études Simondonienne in Paris, visiting faculty of the Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow. He has published on philosophy of technology and media in periodicals such as Research in Phenomenology, Metaphilosophy, Theory Culture and Society, Parrhesia, Angelaki, Cahiers Simondon, Deleuze Studies, Intellectica, Krisis, Implications Philosophiques, Jahrbuch Technikphilosophie, Techné, among others. He is contributing editor of 30 Years after Les Immatériaux: Art, Science and Theory (2015), and author of On the Existence of Digital Objects (prefaced by Bernard Stiegler, University of Minnesota Press, March 2016), The Question Concerning Technology in China. An Essay in Cosmotechnics(Urbanomic, December 2016), Recursivity and Contingency (prefaced by Howard Caygill, Rowman and Littlefield International, March 2019).

Patricia Reed is an artist, writer and designer based in Berlin. Recent writings have been published in Glass Bead Journal (forthcoming), The New Normal (forthcoming), Construction Site for Possible Worlds (Urbanomic, forthcoming), e-flux Journal, Making & Breaking,Angelaki, Para-Platforms (Sternberg); Post-Meme (Punctum Books); e-flux Architecture; Xeno-Architecture (Sternberg Press); Cold War Cold World (Urbanomic); and Distributed (Open Editions). Reed is also part of the Laboria Cuboniks (techno-material feminist) working group whose Xenofeminist Manifesto (2015) was republished by Verso Books in 2018; translated into Korean by Agrafa Society in 2019.

InYoung Yeo is an independent artist, curator and director based in Seoul. Her work expands from artistic materialization of drawing, painting, installation works to curatorial projects with interdisciplinary approaches in topics of Gender, A.I. and Urbanization as her main area of research. She explores various forms of manifestation in visual patterns based on logical structures of the human 'mind' and coincidences in the multi dimensional time and space.Yeo has put together and participated in various projects, exhibitions, residencies, talks and workshops in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Germany, US among others. Some of her major projects and exhibitions include ‘Intersections of Common Space and Time’ a public art intervention project in Seoul, supported by Seoul Art Foundation, Goethe-Institut Seoul; ‘Gender Hierarchy’ exhibition and related programs at Grey Projects, LaSalle College of the Arts in Singapore, in partnership with Goethe-Institut Singapore ; ‘A.I.MAGINE’ an art and technology collaboration project with Seoul City, Seoul National University, Seoul Digital Foundation, Seoul Data Science Lab Project at Art Center Nabi, Space One, Goethe-Institut Seoul; 'a three-way dialogue' as a part of the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2017; East Asia Goethe-Institut A.I. research project 'A Better Version of 人' programs in Korea; Group Exhibitions 'A Free Breakfast', 'Multitude', 'Bare'; and Solo Exhibitions 'a three-way dialogue', 'Space' and 'Visual Interview'.

<참여자 소개>

파비안 어레스티는 작가이자 영화감독이다. 멕시코 이민자 집안의 막내 아들로 태어난 그는 캘리포니아의 산 호아킨 밸리에서 자랐다. 캘리포니아 주립대학 베이커스필드에서 영문학을 전공한 후 칼아츠에서 영화 연출을 전공했다. 그의 영화는 20개 이상의 영화 페스티벌에서 상영 됐으며, 슬램댄스 영화제의 다큐멘터리 프로그래머이고, 현재 에니메이션 텔레비전 시리즈를 공동 기획하고 있다.

안드레아 프랑코( 페루 리마 출생)는 로스앤젤레스에서 활동하는 아티스트, 영화감독, 영화 프로그래머이다. 그의 작품은 관조적인 시선으로 장소와 사람들과의 관계를 논픽션으로 담아낸다. 또한, 경계들, 분계선과 분열, 보이는 것과 보이지 않는것, 육체적인것과 만질수 있는 것들에 대해 다루고 있다. 그가 알고 있는 그리고 알지 못하는 현실들을 개인적인 경험을 통하여 작품속에서 국경, 집단 이주, 이민, 문화적 전통, 후기 식민지 이후 계급 관계, 토착 전통, 정신성과 연계성들을 탐구한다. 그는 세계와 타인에 대한 우리의 인식과 의식을 전환하는 강렬한 치유의 메카니즘으로서의 영상들을 작업한다. 그의 작품이 상영된 곳은 퍼시픽 스탠다드 타임 (Pacific Standard Time LA/LA), 구겐하임 뮤지엄( the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum), BAFICI, 플라허티 뉴욕(Flaherty NYC), 리마 미술관(Museo de Arte de Lima), 로스앤젤레스 현대 전시관(Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions), REDCAT, 지네비 빌바오(Zinebi Bilbao), Matadero Madrid, 리마 영화제, 산티아고 영화제, 미국 다큐멘터리 영화제, Cineteca Nacional de Mexico, Sala Luis Miro Quesada Garland 등 다수이다. 그는 리마 독립영화제의 실험영화부분 프로그래머이자 큐레이터이다.

스텔라 안은 로스엔젤레스 출신의 다분야 예술가이자 음악 프로듀서이다. 그의 작품은 다중적인 구조, 이야기들의 배치, 의미의 붕괴등을 다룬다. 비디오, 설치물과 글이 다수의 갤러리에서 전시되었다. 르콘드레 인터내셔널 (the Palais De Tokyo) , Haus der Kulturen der Welt, 리오데 자네이루에 컬타시네마 , 리마 페스티벌 인디펜던트, 뉴욕의 에이씨 인스티튜트, 휴먼 리소시스 (로스앤젤레스). 또한, 그녀의 음악 프로젝트 아마존닷컴이 로스엔젤레스의 레드불 음악 페스티벌에서 공연되었다.

켈리킴은 서울에서 태어났으며, 영화, 비디오, 다큐멘터리, 설치 등을 통해 우리의 일상속에 내제된 무의식들을 탐구하는 작업을 한다. 작업 과정 속에서 종종 자연스럽게 얻어지는 예측 불가능하고 정제되지 않은 이미지와 스토리들을 꺼내보인다. 캘리포니아에 위치한 칼아츠에서 영화 석사를 졸업했다. 그의 영화 <불확정성의 법칙>은 에딘버러 국제 영화제에 초청 상영됐으며 그밖에 영화와 비디오 들이 미국 로스앤젤레스와 뉴욕 등에 위치한 다수의 뮤지엄, 갤러리와 영화제에서 상영되었다

이혜성은 로스엔젤레스와 서울에서 작업 활동을 하며, 주로 “평범함”을 바탕으로 한 이야기를 탐구한다. 필름/비디오,사진, 그리고 페인팅 등을 통해 그의 작품 주인공들이 공평하고 안전한 플랫폼에서 그들의 이야기를 펼칠 수 있도록 하는 것이 작가의 주된 목적이다. 이혜성은 “칼아츠”에서 석사과정을 마쳤으며, 로스엔젤레스, 뉴욕, 하버드, 멕시코, 베를린 등 다양한 갤러리/필름 상영 공간에서 작품을 선보였다.

나오코 타사카는 일본에서 태어났으며 건축과 웹 프로그래밍을 공부한 뒤 캘리포니아 칼아트에서 영화로 학사 (2006년)와 석사(2011년)를 받았다. 주로 실험영화와 비디오 설치 작품을 만든다.

리오 샴리즈는 영화 감독, 시각예술가, 음악가이다. 퍼포먼스로서의 영화와 기록 과정으로서의 영화적 언어를 그의 에세이 영화에 반영한다. 그는 영화, 스크린 설치 작업, 음악 그리고 퍼포먼스를 통해 사회, 실존과 몸( 일종의 나 라는 객체)에 대한 사유를 탐구하고 질문한다. 참여한 다수의 영화제는 베를린 비엔날레(Berlinale), 로카르노(Locarno), 사라예보(Sarajevo), MoMA’s ND/NF, BAFICI, 프레임라인(Frameline), MixNYC, 토리노(Torino)이고 워싱턴 내셔널 갤러리 (Washington DC National Gallery), 워커 아트센터(Walker Art Center), 링컨센터( Lincoln Center New York)에서 상영되었다. 또한, 오버하우제(Oberhause) 영화제에서 the Max Ophüls Prize 후보에 선정 되었으며 독일 내셔널 갤러리 상(German National Gallery Prize for Young Art Film)의 후보에 올랐다. the Thessaloniki Intl FF 와 독립 카도비체 (Ars independent Katowice) 에서 회고전을 하였다. 입주 작가로 참여한 곳은 타이페이 아티스트 빌리지( the Taipei Artist Village), 벌몬즈 스튜디오 센터(Vermont Studio Center), 서울시립 난지 미술관, 금천 예술공장, 팜 (PAM), 로스앤젤레스 이다. 이스라엘의 아슈켈론에서 태어났으며 열아홉살때 군대를 도중에 그만두고 텔라비브로 갔다. 그는 거기서 영화를 시작했고 컴퓨터로 음악을 만들고 아트 출판일을 했다. 그후 십년정도 독일 베를린에서 살았으며 지금은 캘리포니아에 거주하고 있다

스테이크필름은 서울과 함부르크를 기반으로 활동하는 텍스트+영상+음악 프로덕션 하우스다. “영상을 통한 깊은 문화”를 추구하고 있다.

Fabian Vasquez Euresti is a writer/director. The youngest son born to Mexican immigrants, he grew up in California’s San Joaquin Valley. He studied English Literature at CSU Bakersfield, followed by film directing at California Institute of the Arts.  His films have screened at more than 20 festivals worldwide. Fabian is a documentary programmer for Slamdance and is currently co-developing an animated series for television. 

Andrea Franco (b. Lima, Peru) is an artist, filmmaker and film programmer based in Los Angeles. Her work makes use of an observational lens and non-fiction to create a body of work based on her relationship with the places and people she portrays, and the exploration of boundaries, lines and fragmentation, visible and invisible, physical and intangible. Stemming from personal journeys into known and unknown realities, her work explores borders, diaspora, immigration, cultural heritage, post-colonial class relations, indigenous traditions, spirituality and connectivity. Franco works with the moving image as an impactful and healing mechanism towards a shift in consciousness and our perception of the world and of others. 

Her work has screened at Pacific Standard Time LA/LA, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, BAFICI, Flaherty NYC, Museo de Arte de Lima, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, REDCAT, Zinebi Bilbao, Matadero Madrid, Lima Film Festival, Santiago International Film Festival, American Documentary Film Festival, Cineteca Nacional de Mexico, Sala Luis Miro Quesada Garland, among others. She is also the programmer and curator of the experimental film section of Lima Independiente International Film Festival. 

Stella Ahn is a multi-disciplinary artist and music producer based in Los Angeles. Her work is interested in heterogeneous structures, narrative arrangements, and the collapsing of meaning. She has exhibited videos, installations, and texts with Rencontres Internationales at the Palais De Tokyo and Haus der Kulturen der Welt, as well as with Curtacinema in Rio de Janeiro, Festival Lima ndependiente, AC Institute in New York, and Human Resources in Los Angeles. Her music project, Amazondotcom, has performed in Boiler Room, Red Bull Music Festival Los Angeles, and Mutek MX.

Kelly Sun Kim is a filmmaker and visual artist working in film, video, experimental documentary, installation in order to investigate the force of the unconscious in everyday life. She often uses unpredictable, process-driven approaches to arrive at her images, lending her works an element of surprise. Originally from Seoul, Kelly Sun Kim earned an MFA in Film/Video at the California Institute of the Arts. Her film, Uncertainty Principle, premiered at Edinburgh International Film Festival, UK. Her works have been exhibited at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG), the Torrance Art Museum(TAM), the Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA), the Roy and Edna Disney Theater(REDCAT), and various national and international film festivals.

Hyesung ii is a filmmaker/artist based in Los Angeles and Seoul, Korea, whose work derives from the narratives of “ordinary” individuals and/or daily events. Through the forms of film/video, photos, and paintings, the work is set to create platforms for the subjects to safely tell their story while preserving the core essence of the narrative. Hyesung ii received her Master’s degree from California Institute of the Arts. Her work showed at film venues and art spaces in various places: Mexico, Cambridge, Los Angeles, Berlin, Bradford, Utrecht, New York, etc. 

Naoko Tasaka was born and raised in Japan where she studied architecture and web programming. Tasaka began her work in experimental filmmaking at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in 2006 and graduated with an MFA degree in Film/Video in 2011. Tasaka’s primary focus is experimental film and video installation.

Lior Shamriz is a film director, visual artist, and musician. Their films are essayistic narrations that utilize cinema as performance and the cinematic languages as a process of reflexive documentation. Through their cinema, multi-screens installation, music and participatory performance, they explore and question ideas about society, being and the body (as the “I-Object”). Shamriz presented their films at numerous festivals including Berlinale, Locarno, Sarajevo, MoMA’s ND/NF, BAFICI, Frameline, MixNYC, Torino and venues such as Washington DC National Gallery, Walker Art Center, and Lincoln Center New York. They’re the winner of multiple awards at Oberhausen, was nominated for the Max Ophüls Prize, and shortlisted for the German National Gallery Prize for Young Art Film. They received retrospectives at the Thessaloniki Intl FF and Ars independent Katowice. They were an Artist-in-Residency at the Taipei Artist Village, Vermont Studio Center, Seoul Museum of Arts Nanji, Geumcheon Seoul Art Space and PAM Residencies Los Angeles, where he led film/performance workshops and curated programming. Born in Ashkelon, Israel, they dropped out of the army at nineteen and moved to Tel Aviv, where they began making films and experimenting with computer-generated music and collective art publications. After living a decade in Berlin, they are now based in California. 

STEAK FILM is a film production house based in Seoul that also stages cinematic events throughout the city. In both areas of our work, we promote deep culture through film.

여인영은 작가, 독립 큐레이터이자 디렉터이다. 영국, 미국, 한국에서 영문학, 일러스트레이션, 미술을 수학한 후, 2014년 서울에서 작가 운영 공간 스페이스 원을 창립했다. 이후 한국, 일본, 대만, 독일, 영국, 미국 등 다양한 국가의 미술 공간 및 신진 작가들과 함께 작업하고 실험하며 여러 협력 전시들을 기획했다. 주요 프로젝트 및 전시로 서울 도시데이타 사이언스 연구소 프로젝트  'A.I.MAGINE': 전시, 강연, 워크샵, 퍼포먼스 기획; 스페이스원 프로젝트 'Gender Hierarchy' 독일문화원 싱가포르 후원: 전시, 강연, 퍼포먼스; 2017서울도시건축비엔날레 ‘삼방 회로’: 퍼포먼스 인터뷰와 전시, 퍼포먼스, 패널 토크; 독일문화원 동아시아 지역 프로젝트 'A Better Version of 人' 한국 프로그램: 전시, 패널 토크, 워크샵 기획; 'A Free Breakfast', 'Multitude', 'Bare'  등의 그룹전시 및 '공간', '비쥬얼 인터뷰' 등의 개인전을 열었다.

리사 클러스터커터는 함부르크와 쾰른에서 거주하고 작업하는 독립 큐레이터이다. 2018년 쾰른에 위치한 프로젝트 공간 Strizzi space (www.strizzi.space/)의 공동 창립자이고 다수의 전시회를 초안하였다(예: Strizzi at Palazzo Campofranco).  2018년 부터KunstWerk Köln e.V. 와 프로젝트 공간 PiK Deutz (projektraumimkunstwerk.tumblr.com/) 에서 문화 감독, 쾰른에 Galerie Delmes & Zander와Overbeck-Gesellschaft, Kunstverein Lübeck에서  어시스턴트로 일한 경험이 있다. 그는2017년 함부르크 the Hochschule fürbildende Künste 에서 석사학위를 받았으며, 함부르크 대학과 (the HFBK Hamburg, the University of Hamburg) 스톡홀름 로열 아트 인스티듀트 (the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm) 에서 미술, 독일문학, 과학교육학를 공부했다. 또한, 잡지 쿤스포럼 인터내셔날(Kunstforum International ), 전시 도록Lübeck collects, 그 외 여러 다수의 예술 관련  글들을 쓰고 있다. 

플로리안 뮬러는 2018년 부터 KunstWerk Köln e.V 에서 문화 감독으로 일하고 있으며 쾰른에 위치한 프로젝트 공간 Strizzi in Cologne (www.strizzi.space/)dml의 공동 창립자이다. 1999년부터 2006년까지 RWTH Aachen, IUAV (베니스) 와UdK (베를린) 에서 건축을 공부했다.  또한, 건축사무실에서 일하는 동안 다수의 건축 사진가들을 도와 프리랜서로 일한 경험이 있다. 2010년 박물관 Wallraf - Richartz  (쾰른) 에서the Kunstnacht 2010 전시를 구성했으며, 2011년 부터2012년에 참여하여 감독한 행사는 stART, an initiative of the Friends of the Wallraf - Richartz - Museum and the Museum Ludwig. 또한, 그가 2009년 부터 작업한 인테리어/건축 프로젝트로 3f Architekten, v- architekten, yi- architects and Pfeffer Architekten in Cologne on projects in interior design/architecture 가 있다. 

InYoung Yeo is an independent artist, curator and director based in Seoul. Her work expands from artistic materialization of drawing, painting, installation works to curatorial projects with interdisciplinary approaches in topics of Gender, A.I. and Urbanization as her main area of research. She explores various forms of manifestation in visual patterns based on logical structures of the human 'mind' and coincidences in the multi dimensional time and space.Yeo has put together and participated in various projects, exhibitions, residencies, talks and workshops in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Germany, US among others. Some of her major projects and exhibitions include ‘Intersections of Common Space and Time’ a public art intervention project in Seoul, supported by Seoul Art Foundation, Goethe-Institut Seoul; ‘Gender Hierarchy’ exhibition and related programs at Grey Projects, LaSalle College of the Arts in Singapore, in partnership with Goethe-Institut Singapore ; ‘A.I.MAGINE’ an art and technology collaboration project with Seoul City, Seoul National University, Seoul Digital Foundation, Seoul Data Science Lab Project at Art Center Nabi, Space One, Goethe-Institut Seoul; 'a three-way dialogue' as a part of the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2017; East Asia Goethe-Institut A.I. research project 'A Better Version of 人' programs in Korea; Group Exhibitions 'A Free Breakfast', 'Multitude', 'Bare'; and Solo Exhibitions 'a three-way dialogue', 'Space' and 'Visual Interview'. 

Lisa Klosterkötter is a freelance curator. She lives and works in Hamburg and Cologne. In 2018 she co-founded the project space Strizzi in Cologne (www.strizzi.space/). She is the initiator of various exhibition projects such as Strizzi at Palazzo Campofranco as part of the collateral events of Manifesta 12, 2018 in Palermo. Since 2018 she is working as a cultural manager for KunstWerk Köln e.V. and for the project space PiK Deutz (projektraumimkunstwerk.tumblr.com/). She worked as an assistant at Galerie Delmes & Zander, Cologne and as a curatorial assistant at Overbeck-Gesellschaft, Kunstverein Lübeck. In 2017 she completed her master's degree at the Hochschule fürbildende Künste in Hamburg. She studied fine arts, German literatur and educational sciences at the HFBK Hamburg, the University of Hamburg and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. She writes texts for magazines such as Kunstforum International, exhibition catalogues such as Lübeck collects and various artist books.

Florian Müller has been working since 2018 as cultural manager for KunstWerk Köln e.V. He is the co-founder of the project space Strizzi in Cologne (www.strizzi.space/). From 1999 to 2006 he studied architecture at RWTH Aachen, IUAV in Venice and as a guest student at UdK Berlin. Parallel to his work in architectural offices, he worked as a freelance assistant for various architectural photographers. As team leader he organized the Kunstnacht 2010 at the Wallraf - Richartz - Museum in Cologne. From 2011 - 2012 he coordinated and directed stART, an initiative of the Friends of the Wallraf - Richartz - Museum and the Museum Ludwig. Since 2009 he has been working for 3f Architekten, v- architekten, yi- architects and Pfeffer Architekten in Cologne on projects in interior design/architecture.

대중문화와 주류 문화 속 마법과 영적인 소재를 탐구해본다. 페미니스트의 상징으로 서의  “마녀”는 가부장제와 이성애 중심적 젠더 개념을 뒤흔들어보고, 마법의 힘을 빌려 개인 각각의 현실을 개선하고 수정한다. 퍼포먼스에 참여하여  관객의 자아를 풀어내고 재창조할 수 있는 마법의 길로 초대합니다! 

Explores the uprise of spiritual and occult practices within pop culture and the mainstream. The witch as feminist icon is destabilizing patriarchal and heteronormative conceptions of identity, gender, sexuality and body. Practitioners of Magick are able to modify and enhance reality to meet their individual needs. The audience is invited to participate in a transformative initiation ritual to the alchemic path of dissolving and reinventing the self.

팀 트라이어드는 세 명의 사운드 아티스트가 모여 지속적인 매체 실험을 하는 팀이다. 사운드라는 공통분모 아래 시스템/하드웨어 설비의 김호남, 개발/데이터 분석의 전민제, 전자음악작곡/사운드디자인/음향엔지니어링의 홍광민이 모여 다양한 매체를 활용한 새로운 사운드스케이프를 만들고 있다. 근래의 화두는 데이터를 다른 매체와 감각으로 확장시키는 것이다.

윤심은 작가 겸 디자이너로 활동하면서, 도시 공간을 주제로 한 리서치 및 공간 설치 작업을 진행해왔다. 한국, 미국, 독일에서 학업을 마치고 실무 경력을 쌓았으며, 국내외 도시건축공모전에서 다수 수상하고, 작품을 출판했다. 공간을 디자인하는 작업뿐만 아니라, 공간이 위치한 도시적 맥락에 대한 리서치, 이를 기반으로 한 데이터 시각화, 생태적인 시스템을 바탕으로 한 공간적인 실험에 관심을 두고 작업을 하고있다. 
레이첼 최는 컴퓨터과학을 전공한 개발자로 AR/VR, IoT, Art & Technology, HCI에 관심을 가지고 해당 프로젝트를 진행해 왔으며 ICT관련 공모전에서 다수 수상을 하였다. 현재 컴퓨터과학 석사과정에 있다. 기술과 다양한 분야를 접목하여 사람들과 기술이 인터랙션할 수 있는 재미있는 소재들을 연구하고 있다.

현대적 PC라 불릴만한 물건이 처음 등장했던 시기에 태어난 윤제원은 PC문화의 발전과 함께 같이 성장했다. 컴퓨터를 사용하기 위해서는 학원을 다녀야 했던 시대를 지나 스마트폰이 생활의 일부이자 현대인의 제2의 두뇌라고까지 불리는 현재까지 독특하다면 독특한 체험을 해온 80년대 초 태생으로, 특히 세계적인 게임의 국내의 탑 랭커로 플레이하고 게임커뮤니티의 유저매니저로 활동하면서 뉴미디어와 사이버스페이스를 최첨단으로 대면해 왔다. 이를 바탕으로 게임이라는 가상세계와 커뮤니티라는 온라인 문화 그리고 벙개라 불리는 오프라인 문화인 현실세계의 접점들에서 체험한 디지털 세상의 경험 축적 데이터를 이용한 미학적 연구를 진행하고 있다. 윤제원 작가의 작품은 <zkm_gameplay. the next level>, ZKM_Karlsruhe(독일), <A MAZE>, ArbanSpree(독일), <Games & Politics>, Athens Conservatoire(그리스) 등에 초청됐고 Art Games in Seoul 우승, 13th 월간 미술세계 신진작가 발언전 우수상 등에 선정됐으며 홍익대학교 미술대학 회화과 졸업, 동대학원을 수료했다.

InYoung Yeo (Space One) is an independent artist, curator and director. With a background in English Literature, Illustration and Fine Art in countries including UK, US and Korea, she started an artist-run space -Space One- in Seoul 2014. Since then, she has put together various collaborative exhibitions, working and experimenting with emerging artists and art spaces from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Germany, UK, US, Canada among others. Some of her projects and exhibitions include ‘Intersections of Common Space and Time’ supported by Seoul Art Foundation, Goethe-Institut Seoul; ‘Gender Hierarchy’ supported by Geothe-Institut Singapore in collaboration with Grey Projects Singapore; ‘A.I.MAGINE’ Seoul City, Seoul National University commissioned, Seoul Digital Foundation, Seoul Data Science Lab Project; 'a three-way dialogue' with the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2017; East Asia Goethe-Institut project 'A Better Version of 人' programs in Korea; Group Exhibitions 'A Free Breakfast', 'Multitude', 'Bare'; and Solo Exhibitions 'Space', 'Visual Interview' and 'Self'.

An artist and designer, Yun Shim has researched on urban space and created space installations. Yun Shim gained practical experience after studying in Korea, the United States and Germany. Shim won contests on urban architecture in Korea and abroad and created artworks. Shim’s current interest is not only limited to space design but extends to research on the urban context of space and data visualization based on such research and spatial experiments on ecological systems. 
Rachael Choi is a software developer who majored in computer science. She has been involved in this project with interests in AR/VR, IoT, Art & Technology, and HCI. Choi has also won various ICT-related contests. She is currently a master’s student in computer science and is researching interesting ways for human beings and technology to interact by converging technology in various fields. 

Team TRIAD is a group of three sound artists who continue to experiment on media. Under the common denominator of sound, Honam Kim manages system and hardware equipment, Minje Jeon takes charge in developing and data analysis, and Gwangmin Hong composes electronic music and handles sound designs and sound engineering, to create new soundscapes using various media. The team is currently focusing on expanding data into different media and sensations.

Jewon Yoon was born at the advent of the modern PC and grew up along with the progress in the PC culture. Born in the early 1980s, Yoon experienced both the era when one had to go to a private institute to learn how to use a computer and the present when the smartphone is a part of life and even called the second brain. As one of the top rankers of an internationally famous computer game as well as the user manager of the game community, Yoon has been at the forefront of new media and cyberspace. Based on such experience, Yoon conducts aesthetic research using data from his experience on the digital world, compiled through the virtual world of games, the online culture from game communities, and through the offline culture of bungae[meet-up]. Yoon’s works has been exhibited in zkm_gameplay, the next level(ZKM, Karlsruhe, Germany), A MAZE(ArbanSpree, Germany) and Game & Politics(Athens Conservatoire, Greece). He has received awards from ‘Art Games in Seoul’ and 13th Montly Misul-Segye Emerging Artists awards. He received his BA in painting from Hongik University and finished MA courseworks in the graduate school at Hongik University.

마크 마테스 “평균율 뇌”: 바이올린과 비디오 퍼포먼스를 통한 신경회로망의 음향화Sonification
이번 퍼포먼스에서 선보일 “평균율 뇌”는 ‘나노뇌nanobrain’로도 알려져 있으며 실험실의 “시험관” 안에서 배양되고, 신경 세포망이 만들어내는 데이터를 다성多聲 음악으로 음향화하는 알고리즘에 의해 평균율로 조율된다.

“The Cage"는 상상의 연대,상상의 지역에서 벌어지는 유사-느와르 장르의 우화이다.이야기의 무대가 되는 도시 "익샐론(Exalon)"은 서울과 한국의 해안 지역을 배경으로, 또다른 도시 "리셴버그(Lichtenberg)"는 타이페이를 배경으로 촬영될 것이다. 이야기는 도시와 풍경의 다소 '자연적인(naturalistic)'이미지와 함께 병치되며,이야기 내에서 두 공간 간의 지리학적 요소는 자전적 성격에서 기인하는 나의 사적 기억을 뒤섞어놓는 장치로서 기능한다.
이야기는 리셴버그에서 탈출해 해안가의 도시국가인 익샐론에 정착하고자 하는 닉으로부터 출발한다. 닉은 돌아온 익샐론에서 현란함과 대담함 그 자체인 나이 어린 가수 앨런과 사랑에 빠진다.비록 가족에게 학대를 당하지만 앨런은 자신이 속한 곳을 떠날 생각이 없다.닉은 자신의 고향이 사실 익샐론이며,그의 가족들 중 일부는 여전히 이 곳에 살고 있다는 사실을 숨긴다. 그는 어딘가의 자유를 찾으러 몇 년 전 익샐론을 떠나왔던 것이다.하지만 예전 닉의 고용주가 익샐론에 도착하며 과거가 닉을 덮쳐온다.

Join us at the closing event of ‘Pink Noise Pop Up' with a rooftop film screening. 

The Cage is a pseudo-noir fairytale, taking place in an imaginary geography at an imaginary time. It will be shot in Seoul and the Korean coast as one city (“Exalon”) and in Taipei as another city (“Lichtenberg”), using geographies that mix my own memories from my personal autobiography, with more-or-less ‘naturalistic’ images of city- and landscapes.
It tells the story of Nick, who is escaping an arrest in Lichtenberg and comes to settle down in Exalon, a coastal city-state. There he starts an affair with a young flamboyant singer, Allen, who falls in love with him. Allen, although being maltreated by his family would never think to leave. Nick hides the fact that he’s originally from Exalon, and that parts of his family still live there. He left years ago, hoping to find freedom somewhere else. But the past comes hunting Nick, as as his former boss arrives in Exalon.

VB Co-Director Theia Connell met InYoung and Vanessa in November 2017 in Seoul during an Asialink residency, and invited them to Tasmania. To her delight, they accepted. Both Vanessa and InYoung are involved in running and curating the programs of artist-run spaces in their respective cities, whilst sustaining their own creative practices and managing international collaborative projects.

'InYoung Yeo (1979) is an independent artist, curator and director. With a background in English Literature, Illustration and Fine Art in countries including UK, US and Korea, she started an artist-run space -Space One- in Seoul 2014. Since then, she has put together various collaborative exhibitions, working and experimenting with artists and art spaces from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Germany, UK, US, Canada among others. 'Vanessa Kwan is a Vancouver-based artist and curator with a focus on transdisciplinary, site-specific and community-engaged practices. As Performance Curator at the Vancouver Art Gallery, she produced Fuse, the gallery’s premiere performance event, from 2008-14. She has been a guest curator of exhibitions/ performance at 221A Artist Run Centre, The Richmond Art Gallery, the Powell Street Festival and the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival. She has produced significant public works in Vancouver and Toronto, and is currently in development for curatorial projects in Sydney (AUS), Haverford (US) and Seoul (KR). She serves as an active member of Other Sights for Artists' Projects curatorial collective, and is a founding member of the performance collective Norma, who were honoured with a City of Vancouver Mayor's Arts Award for Public Art in 2011. She writes and publishes regularly on art and culture, and teaches sessionally at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. She has worked at grunt gallery as a curator since 2014.'

“잠자리와 뱀”은 한 소녀와 그녀가 “아이Aai”라고 부르는 대고모 사이에 벌어지는 대화로 이루어진다. 소녀는 ‘아이’의 마을에서 ‘아이’와 함께 여름 휴가를 보냈다. 여름 휴가는 더이상 없다. 그녀는 큰 도시에서 멀리 떨어져 살고, 음향 녹음 기사로 일한다. 그녀는 도시의 다양한 장소에서 소리를 녹음한다. 영화는 뭄바이의 소리 풍경을 탐사한다. 도시의 웅성거림은 다양한 소리의 겹들로 만들어진다. 이 소리들을 골똘히 듣던 소녀는 그녀의 기억을 구성하는 강한 소리 요소들은 모두 마을에서 보냈던 시간과 관련있다는 것을 깨닫는다. ‘아이’와의 거리가 지난 몇 년 동안 멀어졌다. 이러한 감정들은 소녀로 하여금 다른 배경 속에서 ‘아이’와 상상화의 대화를 하도록 이끈다. 편지의 개념으로 영화 전체가 두 개의 화면으로 분할되어 두 개의 영상이 동시에 진행된다. 두 화면을 통해 발생하는 대화는 내면과 외면, 오래된 것과 새로운 것, 육지와 바다, 밤과 낮, 마을과 도시, 시각적인 것과 청각적인 것 사이의 충돌을 연상시킨다. 영화는 또한 도시 뭄바이의 분위기를 담은 기록이기도 하다.

The film is in the form of a conversation. A conversation between a girl and her grand aunt whom she calls " Aai". She spent all her summer vacations with Aai in her village. There are no summer vacations for her anymore. She lives far removed in the big city. She works as a sound recordist. She records sound at various places in the city. The soundscape of the city of Mumbai is explored through the film. The rumble of the city is made up of various distinct sound layers. Listening to these intently she realizes that the strong sound elements that make up her memory are all associated with the time spent in the village. There is a new detachment from Aai that has developed now over the years. These feelings lead her to have an imaginary conversation with Aai in different surroundings. Two screens run simultaneously throughout the film giving a notion of a letter. The dialogue arising from the two screens trigger a sense of conflict between the inside and the outside, the old and the new, land and the sea, night and day, village and the city, visual and aural. The film also works as a document of the ambience of the city of Mumbai.

리피카 싱 다라이는 인도 오디샤 주 부바네스와르에서 활동하는 영화제작자이다. 영화 사운드와 편집을 전공으로, 인도 영화&텔레비전 인스티튜트를 졸업했다. 리피카 싱 다라이의 다큐멘터리, “마녀에 관한 몇 가지 이야기들Some Stories Around Witches”은 마녀 사냥 사건들을 통해 인도주의적 위기를 그리고 있으며, 단편 “폭포The Waterfall”는 오디샤 주 산림의  다양한 생태계의 파괴를 일으키는 채광 산업으로 인해 죽어가는 폭포를 보호하기 위한 사람들의 투쟁을 담았다. 그녀의 작품들은 뛰어난 개인적 내러티브 양식이 특징적이다. 네 개의 인도영화상을 수상하였으며, 국내외 여러 영화제에서 작품이 상영된 바 있다. 현재 인도 영화부의 제작으로 오디샤 주의 인형극 공동체에 대한 장편 다큐멘터리를 만들고 있다.

Lipika Singh Darai
Lipika Singh Darai is a filmmaker based in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.  An aluminous of the premier film school, the Film & Television Institute of India, she specialized in film sound recording and is also an avid film editor. While her feature documentary “Some Stories Around Witches” depicts the humanitarian crisis around witch-hunting cases , her short fiction “The Waterfall” focuses on people’s struggle, to protect a dying waterfall from rapid mining activities which has brought in ecological devastation in one of the highly bio diverse forests in Odisha. She has won four National Film Awards, India in various capacities. Her films are characterized by a strong personal narrative style. Her work has been shown in various international and national film festivals. She is currently making a feature length documentary on the puppeteer communities of Odisha, produced by Films Division, India.

We're honored to present short animation films by Korean independent animation filmmakers, Jeong Dahee, Bum Lee and Sutdio Yog (Kim Ye-young and Kim Yong-geun). Jeong Daehee’s 'The Hours of Tree' studies the relationship between man and nature by examining a tree rooted in the changing seasons. In Bum Lee’s 'Recombination', giant hands manipulate the evolution of life forms by putting them against each other for survival. 'CITY' by Studio Yog (Kim Ye-young and Kim Yong-geun) imagines a stunning urban landscape composed only of the human body. The films explore man’s relationship with nature, man-altered organisms, and our man-made urban environment.

시간 위에서 표류하며 발붙일 곳을 찾지 못하고 떠도는 인간은 나무처럼 뿌리내리기를 원하고, 반대로 나무는 인간을 보며 자유를 갈망해 가지들을 더 멀리 뻗으며 잎사귀를 흔들어댄다고 생각했다. 나무가 한자리에서 시간과 계절의 변화를 겪듯이, 카메라를 한 공간에 놓고 그 안에서 일어나는 변화를 관찰하는 구성으로 이루어져 있다.

I imagine floating without a place to settle, humans want be rooted like trees, while trees stretch their branches and wave their leaves longing for freedom. As trees undergo a change of hours and seasons in one place, this film is a form of observing the change by a camera in one place.

처음 서울을 생각했을 때 가장 먼저 떠오른 이미지는 높다란 빌딩과 아스팔트, 시커먼 매연과 소음이었다. 하지만 자세히 들여다보니 서울은 전부 사람으로 이루어져 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 사방을 가로막고 있는 수많은 벽들이 사라진다고 상상하니 비로소 서울의 체온이 느껴지고 그 숨소리가 들리기 시작했다. 

When I first thought about Seoul City, the images that crossed my mind were only skyscraper, asphalt and noise. However, when I looked closely at the city, I could find the city is composed of people. I tried to imagine there are no walls and frames, and then I was able to start feeling its warmth and hearing the sound of its breathing.

The peaceful swimmers are thrust by giant extradimensional hands into a masticatory contest for survival. Having no teeth, they are forced to mutate and adapt, but success only leads to a more terrifying destination.

스페이스원에서 오는 10월 15일부터 21일까지 베를린 베이스 작가이자 중앙대학교 조교수 Gustav Hellberg 의 총디렉팅아래 7명의 중앙대학교 사진학과 학생들의 전시 ‘Loft-Yard ' 전이 이루어진다. Loft - Yard 전은 7명의 아티스트가 모여, 각자의 방식으로 풀어낸 7가지의 ‘식물’을 제시하고자 하는 전시이다.
이들은 ‘식물’이라는 공통된 주제 아래 지극히 사적인 경험을 녹여내기도 하며, 집단과 공동체를 향한 공적인 메세지를 담아내기도 한다. 각각의 아이덴티티를 가진 채 자란 작업들 사이에 공통점은 없는 듯 하지만 제멋대로 자란 다양한 식물들이 모여 뜰을 이루듯 이‘식물’들은 다락에 모여 작은 조경을 이룬다. 이곳에 잠시 뿌리내린 다양한 창작물들을 통해 작은 다락 속 드넓은 뜰을 보여줄 수 있기를 희망한다.

Space One presents 'Loft-Yard' from October 15th to October 21st under the direction of Berlin-based artist and assistant professor, at the photography department at Chung-Ang University, Gustav Hellberg. With Hellberg's selection of seven undergraduate students, this exhibition introduces seven young artists' interpretation of a broad concept of the image 'plant'. 
Under this common subject, some works deal with broader social issues as others are more private and intimate. As a yard is composed by different kinds of plants, seven ‘Plants’ that have been developed with respective identities make a small landscape in the small space of a loft. Artists hope to present further ideas of a yard through these temporarily rooted creations in this small loft.

Synopsis: 
Vera Brunner-Sung’s first feature follows the experiences of outsiders in Missoula, Montana. American English language instructor Doris (Kathleen Wise) imparts lessons of assimilation to her international students in the classroom. But in her off-hours she is adrift, treading a fine line between solitude and loneliness. As her students find friendship and community, Doris discovers her own true identity in the secrets of the vast Western landscape.

Director's Statement:
I am interested in what happens when we are separated from our origins. The child of immigrants to the United States, I grew up in a land that considers this removal a promise of freedom and opportunity. But what are its consequences? Bella Vista explores both sides: the perils of rootlessness, as well as the optimism of new beginnings. My first feature, the script was inspired in part by my own experience moving to Montana in 2011.

Bella Vista had its world premier at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January 2014 and was awarded the George C. Lin Emerging Filmmaker Award at the 15th San Diego Asian Film Festival.

<두번째 사랑>을 포함한 이전 작품들에서 감독의 단상들이 인물의 몸을 통해 표현된다고 한다면 <서울의 얼굴> 에서는 외부 세계, 풍경의 묘사를 통해 구현된다. 삼풍백화점 붕괴를 시작으로, 1995년부터 14년간 감독 스스로 촬영해 온 서울의 모습을 14개의 챕터로 묶어낸 이 작품은 서울이라는 도시공간의 풍부하고도 혼란스러운 표정을 담아낸 열네 장의 초상화라고 할 수 있다. 서울이라는 공간 속에 존재하는 여러 상징들의 충돌과 역설에 집중하는 이 작품에서는 한 도시공간을 이야기 할 때 필연적으로 대두될 수 밖에 없는 정치와 역사의 문제가 감독의 시선을 통해 해체되고 재구성된다.

서울에서 태어나고 자란 토박이인 동시에 서울을 떠난 이민자이기도 한 감독의 시선은 서울이라는 도시에 속한 토착민의 것도, 서울을 이국의 도시로 바라보는 이방인의 그것도 아니다. 서대문 형무소를 방문한 일본인 여학생들, 여의도 벚꽃 축제를 즐기는 시민들, 감독이 직접 촬영한 삼풍백화점 붕괴 현장, 이태원을 배회하는 미군들과 관광객, 부처님 오신날의 연등 행렬, 419 기념공원에 소풍 온 아이들 등...  <서울의 얼굴>은 감독의 카메라를 통해 14년간 누적되어 온 이 이미지들을 모아 모순과 억압 속에 끊임없이 변화하는 메트로폴리스로 관객을 이끈다.  일상속의 사물들로 음악을 창조해 내는 세계적인 실험음악 작곡가 윤보라의 음악은 작품에 색다른 입체감을 부여한다.

Faces of Seoul is filmmaker Gina Kim’s unique documentary, at once a portrait of an Asian capital and a film essay of a transforming Seoul. The film is taken from the intimate perspective of both an ex local and expatriate, whose knowledge of the city is neither contemporary nor irrelevant.

Faces of Seoul loops its audiences through the ever-changing modern metropolis, from the Seodaemun Prison to the blooming cherry blossoms in a verdant park, from a neighborhood occupied with American soldiers to a parade of Buddhists marching through the streets. In each of these spaces, Gina Kim explores the city she so fondly remembers, reconciling the reality of her memories with that which moves right in front of her. By doing so, Faces of Seoul reveals Korea’s capital as a dynamic place where these opposing concepts--language vs. image, tradition vs. modern, native knowledge vs. exotic encounters—overlap and move against one another, none yielding to a single dominant perspective.

"I wanted to make a documentary that pays homage to two cinematic legacies: first, the great urban symphony films from the silent period such as Dziga Vertov’s Man With A Movie Camera, and second, the more recent travel essay films such as Wim Wenders’ Tokyo-Ga and Chris Marker’sSans Soleil. I wanted to photograph Seoul, while remaining attentive to its own unique sounds, and the fleeting nature of the cityscape. Faces of Seoul is collaged from historical archival images of important landmarks, still photos from private family albums, everyday street sounds, and the stories of several people whom I have randomly encountered. Seoul is a city that was once to me very familiar, but has become increasingly unfamiliar."

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

1973년 서울 출생. 2002년 장편 다큐멘터리 <김진아의 비디오일기>가 베를린 영화제에 초청되고 2003년 장편극영화 데뷔작 <그 집 앞>이 세계적인 호평을 받으면서 국제무대에서 먼저 인정받았다.
2007년 완성한 <두번째 사랑>은 하정우와 <인 디 에어>로 아카데미상 조연 후보에 오른 베라 파미가가 주연한 인종과 계급을 넘어서는 사랑 이야기로 세계 언론의 주목과 호평을 받았다. 최초의 한미합작영화로 선댄스 영화제 국내 경쟁부문에 진출했고 프랑스 도빌 아메리칸 영화제에서 심사위원대상을 수상했다.
2004년-7년에는 아시아 감독 최초로 하버드대학 시각예술학부 교수로 재직하며 영화제작과 이론을 가르쳤다. 하버드대학에서 처음으로 영화이론과의 정규 수업으로 한국영화이론을 강의하여 화제가 되기도 했다.
2009년에는 장편 다큐멘터리 <서울의 얼굴>을 완성하여 베니스 영화제에서 상영했다. 동시에 제 57회 베니스 영화제 경쟁부문의 심사위원을 역임함으로 한국 여성감독으로는 최초로 세계 삼대 영화제 경쟁 부문의 심사위원을 맡는 영광을 누렸다.
2013년 완성된 양자경, 슈퍼주니어 M 헨리 주연의 장편극영화 <파이널 레시피>는 상하이를 배경으로 태국, 중국, 한국에서 촬영되었다. 베를린 영화제 Culinary Cinema 부문 개막작으로 상영된 <파이널 레시피>는 한국, 중국, 미국의 관객과 만날 예정이다.
2015년 현재 UCLA 대학교 영화과 교수로 재직중이며 헐리우드와 한국을 오가며 활동 중이다.

Gina Kim's five feature-length films, along with her short films have garnered impressive acclaim and have been screened at many prestigious film festivals, such as Berlin, Venice, Locarno, Rotterdam, Buenos Aires, San Sebastian, Pusan, Deauville and Sundance, as well as the MOMA, Centre Pompidou and the Smithsonian. Invisible Light won the special award at the 2004 Seoul Women’s Film Festival has been screened at more than 23 film festivals and in over 15 countries.  Never Forever, which was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at 2007 Sundance Film Festival, was awarded the Jury Prize at the 2007 Deauville American Film Festival. In regard to Never Forever (starring Vera Farmiga and Ha Jung-Woo), Variety writes, “Kim’s highly sensitive camera turns the film into a chamber-piece of hushed eroticism and surprising narrative grip.” Martin Scorsese has called Never Forever, “A moving experience [in which] the performances are wonderful and touching, and the style...intense and very precise.” Never Forever was the first co-production between the United States and South Korea, and the film was theatrically released in the US, South Korea, and France.
Kim’s most recent film is 2013’s Final Recipe, a pioneering China-Korea co-production starring Michelle Yeoh. With actors and crew from all over the world, the film was shot in Thailand, China and Korea. The Hollywood Reporter commends Kim for how “she conjures a non-exotic piece out of a territory-trotting narrative, where every place is made to seem like home.” Final Recipe screened at the 2014 Berlin Film Festival as the opening film for the Culinary Cinema section and will be theatrically released in 2015.
Between 2004-2007, and from 2013-2014, Kim has taught film production and theory classes at Harvard University (Department of Visual and Environmental Studies), being the first Asian woman teaching in her department. Kim also served as a jury member at many film festivals and awards, such as the Torino Film Festival, Venice Film Festival and Asian Pacific Screen Awards.
Kim received her MFA from Cal Arts and her BFA from Seoul National University.
